Microsoft has unveiled Coreutils, a new feature in Windows 11 allowing developers to run numerous popular Linux command line utilities directly from the Windows environment. This innovation was introduced at the Build 2026 developer conference held in Seattle and aims to alleviate the “cognitive load” developers encounter when transitioning between Windows and other operating systems.
Historically, accessing Linux command line utilities on Windows required using workarounds such as Git Bash or the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL), which can be inefficient. Microsoft’s announcement highlights that developers often find themselves switching between platforms, leading to inconsistencies in command usage and a disruption in workflow.
Coreutils simplifies this process by enabling most Linux commands to be executed straight from the command prompt, PowerShell, or Windows Terminal. Microsoft emphasizes that this feature allows developers to maintain their established workflows across different environments, such as Linux, macOS, and cloud platforms, without the hassle of transitioning between systems.
The utility is installed as a single executable through WinGet. It is a Rust rewrite of the GNU uutils/coreutils project, unifying commands across various Linux distributions. This approach is designed for efficiency, utilizing a multi-call executable with NTFS hard links for easy management.
Coreutils supports approximately 75 Linux utilities, including essential commands like ls, cp, and grep. However, there are limitations; some commands conflict with existing CMD or PowerShell commands, while others rely on features not supported by Windows. Microsoft provides a compatibility table to inform users of these conflicts, meaning certain commands will not be available.
In addition to Coreutils, the Build 2026 conference also highlighted Microsoft’s upcoming WSL containers CLI and API for deploying Linux containers on Windows, a new framework for autonomous agents, and the introduction of Microsoft Scout, an AI agent focused on task automation in Microsoft 365.
