My 30-Year Linux Journey: 4 Complaints, 2 Reasons I’m Back to My MacBook

Since 1997, my experience with Linux has been overwhelmingly positive. It’s rare for me to encounter issues, and when I do, they’re usually easy to resolve. Over the years, I’ve utilized Linux on various devices, including desktops, laptops, tablets, phones, and servers. However, my journey hasn’t been free of frustrations, as there are some lingering issues that continue to affect my experience.

Key Issues with Linux

  1. Audio Recording GlitchesAudio recording has proven to be the most persistent problem. While playing sound through applications like Spotify typically works flawlessly, recording audio often leads to difficulties. I once faced major issues when trying to record an audiobook using Audacity on Linux. Despite the evolution of technology, I revisited similar problems during a recent recording session. Although I could solve the issue by utilizing an external audio interface, this is not a feasible option for most users. The underlying problems stem from Linux’s audio servers, which have long struggled with performance consistency.

  2. Laptop Suspend IssuesIf you use Linux on a laptop, you may have noticed that suspension and resumption can be hit or miss. Closing the lid can lead to uncertainty about whether the machine will wake when opened. I’ve experienced this variability between different Linux distributions and even between their releases. This inconsistency makes it harder for me to choose a Linux laptop over my MacBook, which handles suspension reliably.

  3. Bluetooth Connectivity ProblemsBluetooth issues are not unique to Linux; they are common across many platforms. However, I find myself dealing with specific challenges on Linux that have led me to refrain from using Bluetooth altogether at times. These problems often emerge when trying to connect audio devices, causing more frustration. I have also experienced connectivity issues with Bluetooth peripherals like mice, affecting my workflow.

  4. Default Dark ThemesAlthough design is subjective, I have a personal preference for light themes, and I find it frustrating that many Linux distributions default to dark modes. This may enhance visibility in low-light environments, but I often prefer a brighter interface. A feature allowing users to choose their theme during installation would certainly improve the initial experience, particularly for newcomers.

These concerns, while they’ve improved slightly over time, highlight some persistent challenges I hope the Linux community will address. As much as I love Linux, these issues occasionally push me towards considering alternative operating systems like macOS for specific tasks.
