Developed by Kovid Goyal, this update comes with increased support for MTP (Media Transfer Protocol)-based Kindle devices, particularly those released in 2024 or later, by enabling the generation of page number files (APNX).
Another significant improvement in this release is the ability to disregard the "et al." suffix when searching for similar e-books by author. This makes it easier to find books by an author, regardless of how their name is formatted.
Additionally, the update addresses a regression impacting older Kobo devices, which had previously stopped functioning with Calibre. The MTP driver has also been updated to handle an issue where LibMTP could fail to return device serial numbers on certain systems.
Calibre 8.7 fixes multiple bugs from its predecessor, including issues regarding the configuration needed for sending books to devices and problems with metadata mapping rules that weren’t handling commas correctly during downloads. The Next/Previous buttons in the Text search tool have also been restored to functionality.
The user interface has seen some enhancements, particularly in the Edit Metadata dialog, where all multiline fields are now vertically stretched for better usability. Furthermore, several news sources, including renowned publications like New York Magazine and Military History, have been improved for better article access.
